The purpose of this report is to clarify the age and stratigraphic position of the Cannery Formation as defined by Loney (1964), modified by Muffler (1967), and redefined by Jones and others (1981), and to delineate its depositional environment and tectonic setting. Undated rocks that were provisionally assigned to the Cannery Formation by Muffler (1967) yielded much older fossils than those from rocks at the type area, but although rocks in the type area contain Permian fossils, the age of the unit was revised to Devonian and Mississippian by Jones and others (1981).
